In Response To: Re: Infiltration [Teaser Trailer] (Psychophan7)

: Good camera work, but the overall piece leaves something to be desired. The
: opening dialogue was interesting, as well, but it seemed to be cut short.
: Also, with the dialogue being contained to a blank screen, it's hard to
: discern what's going on in the actual footage without context. Assuming
: the peachy-orange guys are the rebels told by the video description, if
: the voice-over was saying "out gunned and out numbered" as they
: marched across the screen, it'd be able to set the tone better. The
: marines, which I assume are clad in the steel/[colour] ODST armour, should
: be better trained. Yes, bullets look cool flying around haphazardly, and
: it is possible that a sniper/lookout can be caught off guard; Once those
: first rounds are fired, the guy for the mounted turret should have gotten
: right onto the emplacement ready for the oncoming threat.

: More on the pretty but ultimately useless flying bullets: Custom game
: settings are awesome. If you need people to take rounds without injuries,
: you can tone the damage modifiers down to miniscule levels. Not only can
: you have bullets hitting in the general area of the target, but such
: elements like a turret being pointed at a cieling (presumably shooting
: enemies of the 'directly in front' variety) can be avoided for better
: scene composition.

: I honestly think this teaser trailer was done in five minutes with a single
: take. The director told some people to get into the proper permutations
: and colour schemes and told them, "Just shoot at each other without
: killing each other." The party seems to have been composed of 8-10
: people, as well. The term 'teaser' is also a bit of a mislead; It doesn't
: tease the viewer with any apparent plot device. It's more akin to a
: concept trailer because instead of showing you there's more than just
: fighting going on, it's showing you that there will be fighting going on.

: In summation: Largely unimpressive. The projected release of Summer 2008
: seems feasible with this level of quality and work. The only positive
: thing I have to say is that the opening voice work was good; It didn't
: convey that there was a sense of urgency (and a lack of background noise
: suggests that despite not being able to "hold them off" that
: they found reprieve from the fighting and had an hour or two to collect
: themselves. Maybe that's why the turret guy was rather lax?

Thanks for the cinematic feedback, I'll think more about visuals with that opening sound effect. However, you don't have to listen very closely to hear machine gun fire and explosions in the background. That clip I redid several times, adjusting the sound effects so as not to drown out the voice, which is most important. I regret now not including further information about the plot, although the general idea of the film can be seen in the video description.

I'd like to point out that I colored the rebels as tan, not orange.

I always see complaints like this when movies are lacking in realism, so I've got news for you: this is Halo, not reality, although I try to make it look that way. Some of the actions of the characters are thus going to be unrealistic, even though I urge actors to think reality (no jumping, reloading in the open, etc.).

If you play the campaign, you'd see even ODSTs are not the most effective fighting force (contrary to Marines in modern day), so they are not going to be 100% effective, especially being fired at with a .50 caliber. That's also why the turret was slow to be used, because the sniper did not get a warning off in time to warn of a vehicle mounted weapon. I can also tell you that the rebels didn't know the Marines were there.

I instructed the Warthog gunner to not "shoot at the ceiling", but as you can see, at the white rail the Marines are taking cover behind. Although he never seems to land a good shot, unlike playing in Halo 3, would it be feasible for all of the Marines to die within a few seconds (for sake of the film), or that a rebel soldier will have training in Marine weaponary, which was stolen during the invasion? I realize none of the film explained that, but that's how it is.

I can also tell you this was not done in five minutes. This scene alone took about ten minutes to explain how everything would be done to the actors, and then after watching it I scrapped it and reshot it the next day, which took several takes. And yes, settings were adjusted so players can take additional damage so they don't die when I don't plan them to.
