There are no rules (at least in : botany, other professions have their own rules of nomenclature) stating : that a name must be Latin, only that it looks Latin. Good job working on : the translations, it was an interesting read! Good call. Admitting that some or all of the names might be gibberish isn't a very constructive starting point for an amateur translator, though -- I figured if I was going to do it, I'd best do it by the book. It's worth mentioning, too, that real world scientific names don't always match gender; I called 'em out on the Engineer because, with the exception of the Chief, they clearly chose to say something in Latin, as opposed to follow the comparably boring rules of binomial nomenclature (a decision I completely support). And when saying something in a language, one's obliged to follow its rules. So say I! And, if anyone's wondering -- Louis' front page news post headline is a slightly bungled legal term (properly 'res ipsa loquitur') meaning 'the thing speaks for itself'. I noticed that he added an extra 'c' to 'septempunctata' in a comic news post the other day, too. Tsk tsk! ; )
