I think blue was just suggesting that the closest english word was "Augment." You seemed to come closer to translating it to mean size, 'big/growth.' You could more easily to take it to mean 'Augemented, improved (growth)'. Just like the Brutes, the closest English words are probably "Feral" and "servant." I don't know much Latin, though. I erroneously read "Ferox" as being closer to "Ferrus," which is Iron. As for the Grunts, I'm guessing they were thinking more along the lines of the literal 'Cool(slang)' instead of cold. The monk bit could be anything from Philosopher to Ninja, if you consider Bungie's collective persona.
