: I'll also definitely try to take a look at other projects to see how producer
: establish between different Elite characters' speech. It is my goal to
: hopefully introduce each character in a unique enough way, and with a
: unique enough tone of voice (I know I didn't do a great job of that this
: time around), that it will be obvious enough, but adding to the pot would
: always be great, especially if I can't nail it down on one end completely.

Fancy camera work helps. I'm not talking about simple things like just putting the camera on the speaker.

You're aware of the "Rule of Thirds," correct?

Tic-Tac-Toe...?

It basically says that the viewer's attention will start from the left (bottom-left, if I recall correctly) before spreading out to the rest of the piece. There's more to it than this, but I'm being pressed to get this written quickly.

If the character is delivering a major speech to other characters, they should occupy about 2/3 of the screen. This shows that they're the most deserving of attention. Putting focus on the left/right areas allows you to do more of a torso/head type of thing, while top/bottom allows you to do a close-up on the face (or some other weird perspective).
Left/Right:

Top/Bottom:

If you're not keen on the character not being in the center, you can still get them to be 2/3 of the screen.

If you're doing a distance shot (or a shot where the subject is smaller than the screen space), you can center them using the rule of thirds, too.

Play with tracking and zoom, too. You could start off with the subject being in an area different than a whole 2/3 and slowly move in/out to frame them. If you had a character delivering a major speech to more than just a handful of other characters (like the rallying of soldiers near the end of The Codex), you could go from...

to...

...where the blue 1/3 is the "audience."

I forget where I was going with this. If I wasn't being pressed to go dungeon crawling, then this would be a lot longer and hopefully more clear.

Final note: Play with the camera! Master your tool, your only limitation is your imagination! Exclamation mark!!

I make maps.
