In Response To: I didn't see any proof. (Narcogen) : You don't understand the concept of value. Things are worth what people are : willing to pay for them. If people don't buy the map packs, then they'll : stop selling them. But if everyone wants them for free, you can bet no one : will sell them. If you want to be part of a different economy, that works : a different way, then it's easy-- you be a PC gamer, get the PC version of : games, and if a studio wants to give you a free map pack directly to you, : using their servers, then they do so. Epic wants to have their cake and : eat it too, here, being part of the XBLM and benefiting from that audience : without giving MS a share for footing the bill. It works both ways. Gears sold Xboxes. Free map packs will keep people playing on XBL for longer (and paying for the privilage). How exactly does Microsoft not win here? It's hard to quantify what happens when you give something away. You may end up with more money, you may end up with less, but you will end up with good will from your customers, which could build brand loyalty. You may gain more intital profit from selling packs and whatnot, but I do think people resent being nickel-and-dimed for every new map/skin/whatever. In the long run, who knows what this will do, but it's very possible that it could benefit both epic and MS.
