I was thinking this might be the Master Chief, reaching Earth from the Forerunner ship (maybe in a smaller Forerunner craft). The Chief's return sets off the cheering. The ship he and Regret are on at the end of Halo 2 is enormous, right? It was the center of the Covenant's city. Seems like no one would bother saying "it's bigger than a banshee" if that's what's crashing down to earth. And probably not pilotable in such a way to be flying lower than a Pelican.
