I've never actually tried playing straight through the entire H1 campaign, but now you mention it, I must give it a try. Better have some liquid sustenance on hand; it could take a while! : I can usually get into the belly of the beast on Truth and
Yes, it's annoying how Keyes likes to get himself killed during the escape in level 3. Unfortunately there seems to be an unwritten law of computer game design whereby any character you escort is obliged to have no sense of self-preservation whatsoever. Don't you just love that? But you can make things a lot safer by having first led everyone to the back of the control room before Grunts and Jackals swarm in. That way you can rush forward and take care of things yourself, hopefully. I also make sure to lob grenades that land at a few of the doors just as they open. As for the tough battle you get when you board the ship, there are actually three items relating to that on my level 3 fun page at Bad Cyborg if you're interested (Boarding challenge, Sniping in the first room, Massed enemy in the first room). Trouble is, even if you get all the way through to the mad stunt-drive at the end of level 10, it seems to be a fickle business as to whether you survive the huge jump, even if you land the right way up. Very annoying.
