Thermopylae Connection In The Halo Novels | |

In Response To: The 300, Thermopylae, and Halo (Brodingo) Thermopylae could connect to what happened toward the end of the novel First Strike. You may recall that a massive Covenant force was massing in deep space and were preparing to strike Sol. In order to give the people of Earth enough time to prepare for the attack John and the rest of the Spartans decided to sacrifice their lives to try to destroy or disable the fleet. They ended up escaping, of course, but Vice Admiral Whitcomb and Lieutenant Haverson sacrificed their lives by drawing the fire of the Covenant(similar to arrows) and drawing as many Covenant ships to the Unyielding Hierophant as its reactor went off and incinerated everything within the blast zone(the Persians also incurred absurdly high casualties compared to how many Greeks died). You can also draw a parallel to how those who died were chosen to die. The Greeks that were to remain behind had to have live children to ensure their bloodline lived on. Those whose bloodline would end there were forced to leave. Similarly, there are many people qualified to be Admirals and ONI agents, but there is(as far as we know) nobody to replace the Spartan IIs. Also, you may equate King Leonidas to Admiral Whitcomb, particularly because he was the only Admiral to escape Reach alive. |
