Re: Bungie's role in Halogen shutdown

In Response To: Re: Bungie's role in Halogen shutdown (Rox)

: If Halogen had been finished, I would've bought C&C Generals to play it.
: Generals is fun, I knew from having tried a copied.. copy. But it's not
: worth buying. Halogen multiplayer would have been worth it.

All the more reason for Microsoft to disallow the Halogen team from doing their project, then. They are expanding the market for C&C Generals by using the Halo intellectual property. In short, the developers and publishers of C&C benefit financially from the work of Slipstream (which did the work without compensation and made the product available for free) and Bungie, which created the Halo intellectual property.

The only possible upside of allowing this to go on is community goodwill-- but in this case, it is more than offset by even whatever small segment of the market would choose Halogen over a legitimate licensed Halo RTS.

: So wouldn't you say that would've been one more win for EA, at the expense of
: Bungie and Microsoft? I don't care how awful Microsoft are, or were at
: least. EA is much, much worse. The Halogen team is still working on what
: looks to become an equally awesome (and now completely legal) mod. Halo
: Wars is promising to bring something unique to the genre once more, like
: Halo did to FPS, and Age of Empires did to RTS.

I do say it would be a win for EA. It would expand the appeal of C&C at no cost to them, with no compensation to Bungie. And let's face it-- if the Halo intellectual property were, at the very least, only HALF the appeal of this mod, rather than just the hard work of the Slipstream team, there wouldn't even be a discussion about this going on.

Notice there was not a peep from EA objecting to the mod. It benefits them and the C&C community. It only benefits the tiny portion of the Halo community that overlaps that community.

: Even if you end up disliking the finished game, it'll still serve to expand
: the Halo universe, its creator's visions, and Bungie's territory on this
: earth. One step closer to world domination.

An unauthorized, unlicensed, non-canon mod for another company's engine doesn't do a darn thing for Bungie world domination.

: Don't you want to be a part of that? I know you do. Now throw down that hate
: and join us.

I'm not the one hating. The rabid Halogen fans alleging that Bungie has betrayed them because Microsoft won't let them give away their intellectual property for free, who are somehow trying to insinuate that the Halogen team owns the idea of a Halo RTS (although Bungie apparently isn't allowed to actually own Halo, isn't that funny) and that Ensemble is outright stealing from Slipstream-- they're doing the hating.
