I dunno, dual needler on LAN isn't so bad against swords...but I get what you're saying, and I think that's the key argument here. The pro-Halo 1 players almost always played with generic starters, and my crew doesn't. Rarely do they play around with custom starts on Halo 2(unless I make the gametype, I like the carbine/brute PR/what have you as a starter). But given the choice between starting me off with the plasma pistol or AR on a level with pistols in H1, or starting me off with an SMG on a level with BRs, swords, etc. in Halo 2, I'll take the latter. Personally if there's no superior firepower around for me to take, I'll simply do my best to stay out of the open(not much of an option on Coag spawns, though) and try to ambush someone-something you don't necessarily need a better gun to do :P Sometimes it doesn't work, but more often it does. Though once again, like in Halo 1-if you start with a more powerful weapon, why would you both to ever drop it? Why wouldn't you wander around with it out except for the moments where you may go into a specific situation more suited to say, the shotgun, or sniper? Whether or not people loved that test of skill between pistol duels, it gets redundant when you're just plain better than everyone else with it, or you're just plain worse. Losing may still be fun, but getting destroyed 50-5 in a team game just isn't particularly exciting or fun for either team. Halo's pistol really only works if people are of comparable skill, and in the event that this isn't the case, Halo 2 is a much more fun game. Thus why I prefer 2 over 1, even in LAN play. it doesn't have my friends getting pissed off and quitting the game after a couple matches, things just tend to be closer, and more back and forth. Maybe my skill should buy me a bigger lead? Perhaps, but I'm getting more game time in, and I'm having more fun doing it. |
