All three have directed action/fantasy/science fiction films that have alternately been financial successes and are not necessarily considered financial disasters. If one had to have a name, the Chief could be played by Gary Sinise, Ed Harris, or even Ron Perlman. It's not the only way, but it is a way. The choices here are not "known but inappropriate" vs "possibly appropriate as seen from a limited sample of works in a different medium, but without any feature-length experience whatsoever". : Future novels will be written by Danielle Steel, Anne Rice, and James Frey. : They've sold many, many more books than that Nylund guy, who is a total : piker in comparison. And wouldn't it be awesome to see James Frey : promoting his new Halo novel on Oprah? She's someone we've all heard of : too. That means she's good. Nylund isn't, but for my money, Dietz was. What's Alan Dean Foster doing these days? : Music? No more free rides for those no-names O'Donnell and Salvatori. Before : Halo came along they were mostly known for writing ad jingles , so : obviously they have nothing to contribute. Let's get Dr. Dre, Gwen Stefani : and Garth Brooks to collaborate on the soundtrack. It'll be : "dope," as the kids say. Or what if they got Santana and that : guy from Matchbox 20 to do it? Their record sold a jillion copies! I'm all for O'Donnell and Salvatori getting to ride Halo into Hollywood, even if that means leaving Bungie behind, because frankly, if they want to do it, I think they're deserving. On the other hand, what about Horner, Goldsmith, or even Williams? Let's not be ridiculous. If you want known names in science fiction films, we are not talking about the examples you make above. You've nicely tattered that little straw man, but it wasn't quite what those criticizing the choice had in mind, I think. : I sure hope Peter Jackson takes my advice and only picks known quantities for : the Halo movie. Imagine the horror if we all had to walk into that theater : not knowing exactly what to expect . I sure hope Jackson and the others have balanced the issues of bringing in Hollywood people who have preconceived ideas about what a "video game movie" is and how things are done in the industry against the potential issues of dealing with someone who, to date, has only done short subjects. I don't think it's going to far to suggest there is a certain amount of risk involved with this approach. As mentioned elsewhere, the Hitchhiker's feature film is a great example of the risk there.
