Re: Ahah, but . . .

In Response To: Ahah, but . . . (Jillybean)

: Gravemind talks about suffering infinity. Now while he's a different form of
: Flood, that does imply that he has a concept of suffering. It could be
: argued that its simply a poetic way of saying he gets bored, but what he
: means is that the Flood will starve with nothing to eat, but they cannot
: die (because they are already dead). Very Pirates of the Caribbean. So in
: essence, starving to death without dying. Sounds painful, at least by our
: understanding of it.

The flood are actually decaying. Their physical bodies will rot off without any further hosts to carry them forward. With the exception of Gravemind and the infection forms (Who probably hibernate of do something similar so they can jump straight back into action after a hundred thousand years), the rest of the flood would have decayed to nothing.

Even Gravemind and the infection forms would die if starved for long enough.

: Gravemind, however, by all appearances - is a big plant. Plants don't feel
: pain (in the traditional sense of the word, they don't have a nervous
: system) so unless he is made of flesh with nerves, how does he know what
: pain is?

How do you know he's a plant? He may look like one, but he moves. Earlier concept art drew him with Elite skulls for teeth. He's not a plant. I wouldn't dream of analyzing him for botany class.

He probably does know what pain is- intellectual, mental pain, at least. And have we seen him getting hit by something painful, like a MAC round in the gut?

: Perhaps through his telepathic connection with the other Flood forms who, by
: virtue of having hosts, do have a central nervous system and would feel
: pain, (if indeed Flood do).

In Halo CE, the flood combat forms flinched if you meleed them. Funnily enough, all the hammering from plasma and ballistic weapons didn't seem to hurt until the very last second.
