In my : personal opinion, judging by this scene, it seems that the answer to the : question of where the Ark is is on Earth, but the exact location is still : a mystery. As if it hasn'e been said before.... exactly. Or in New Mombasa, Cortana says roughly (lazy): "They didn't expect to find us here... I mean humanity... on EARTH!" The reason the Covenant were pushing so speedily toward Earth wasn't that they were ever following transports- they were stumbling on Human colony after colony on their way to the location where the knew the Ark to be. They (for whatever reason) wiped out colonies along the way when they found them, but they were always headed toward the place where they hoped to start the Great Journey. That's why Regret jumped in early with the small fleet- no one in the Covenant ever thought Humans would ever actually live so close to a site so critical to the Covenant religion. We were always just an anomaly, some fiercely resistant pest at the border of the shrine. We were duly swept aside as they continued on their journey (although why we weren't just absorbed remains a mystery). We made ourselves quite a bit more than just "pests" after Halo, of course. But anyway, that gets complicated. Regret jumped to Earth because he knew something was on the surface. He apparently didn't quite get to find it, and that's why the Propehts are swinging around on the return trip.
