More than that. In the marathon universe, there was a war between Thermopylae and Icarus. Icarus was imprisoned in the labyrinth on crete. To escape, he constructed wings, and used them to fly out. Overwhelmed and overjoyed by the experience of flying, he flew higher and higher until he was too close to the sun, where his wings burned up and died.

This so closely parallels rampancy in an AI. Imprisoned, it is quickly overwhelmed when unleashed on a planetary sized network and allowed to grow (as Cortana did when she accesed Halo's). I'm pretty sure this was mentioned in Fall of Reach, but the AI can grow so much so fast, it will kill itself by spending all of its time thinking.

Seeing as how we may have a rampant AI on our hands (she was certainly having trouble in first strike), I think Cortana may be in for some trouble.

: wait, isn't Earth the greatest prize that the covenant can get from
: humanity? Maybe not. I think that if the track hints at the story, then
: Earth might be a Thermopylae, and there is a bigger prize that the
: covenant can get from humanity.
