In Response To: Re: Classical Chinese Literature in Halo? (Spartan Jag)

And finally, Tartarus has to do what Truth orders. In the scene where Mercy is abandoned after being attacked by a flood form, Tartarus is disgusted by Truth's reaction, but he follows Truth without helping Mercy at all. Is it because he is a blind follower or is it because he has no choice in the matter?

: I think he's probably a blind follower. It seems he believes in the Great
: Journey and all of that, as evidenced by the comment about the Brutes not
: the Elites going on the Great Journey with the Prophets.

I've read more into the story. The Monkey King accompanied a high monk(The Halo counterpart appears to be Truth) on his Great Journey into India, the land of the Buddha. Since the journey was meant to be his salvation, he had a genuine interest in seeing it's success, but he was fitted with an iron headband that would cause him excruciating pain if he openly disobeyed the monk or return to his old havoc-wreaking ways.

What I meant was "Is he a blind follower of the Prophet of Truth or is it because he has no choice but to obey Truth's orders", and not whether or not he blindly believes in the Great Journey.

Tartarus could easily have gotten that infection form off Mercy and taken the wounded prophet off on a Phantom. Tartarus moves as though to save Mercy, but is stopped when Truth says, "The Great Journey waits for none, not even you, brother".Tartarus knows that Truth has no intention of saving Mercy, even though saving Mercy is no problemo. The only reason why he himself doesn't argue with Truth or disobey him to save Mercy is because he has no choice in the matter.

Tartarus does believe in the Great Journey, because, like the Monkey King's journey, it's a journey to his salvation.
