: Think of it as a 2-part fail-safe. The humans have known how to activate the rings ever since they ran into the monitor on installation 04. And master chief relates to forerunner tech very well somehow, so I wouldn't say that all human memories have been lost. I think the real 2 part failsafe is the ring and the flood. And that we're expendable. The foreunner had to have known about evolution. They had to have known about human curiousity, and the search for truth. They had to have known that space travel would take place, starting with the moon, mars, and so on. They had to have known before humans explore beyond their galaxy, they would find one of these rings.. Their curiousity leading to the Flood. And boom.. You're left with a choice, get fucked, or fire the rings. That's a much better failsafe. It's a giant electric fence for the monkeys.
