The Japanese (and English) version runs at 50fps whereas the American version runs at 60fps.
The game's loop, and thus the physics, is based on timing regarding these. However I believe that Bungie did not alter it entirely correctly. You seem to fall faster on certain versions, and die in places on certain versions where you otherwise wouldn't.
...I think.
