: I think the major problem with "recoil" that makes it so lame is
: that all that really happens is you have to keep sliding your mouse
: forward while you shoot. Perhaps if Bungie made it so insted of recoil
: just making you aim up jerkily, it could have your crosshair just bounce
: around. Not so much as to make shooting someone 20 feet away dificult, but
: perhaps someone that's 100 feet away would be harder to shoot at.
: Understand what i'm saying? :)

Past bungie games (Marathon, etc) had what was called a 'theta error'. Basically, some weapons were more accurate (less theta), some less (more theta). The assault rifle had a pretty high theta, and spraying at someone 30-40 feet away was pretty pointless... but a competent pistolero could do serious damage at range (no one-hit kills, more like 4-6).

This wasn't terribly realistic (aimed rifle will be more accurate at longer range than aimed pistol with shooters of comparable skill), but was explained in-game by a terminal describing how the MA-75 Assault rifle was a crappy design procured by a corrupt government (or something like that).

It was still useful point-blank.

As far as the 'realism' of recoil goes, does "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction" sound familiar? Until we find a way around that, recoil will be with us.

And if you think it's unrealistic, head down to the range and see how recoil works in real life. It'll give you a whole new perspective on the 'realism' of 1pp shooters....
