I agree with Mark. Does anyone remember King's Bounty? Great game. But just like in Halo you had a giant world to explore, but you were limited in how you could explore that world by a series of obstacles eg mountains, rivers, deserts, thick forests etc. If you wanted to cross the river you had to buy a boat and that meant you had to go to a town to buy it. If you wanted to get over the mountains you had to either fly or walk around it. Good game design guides the player to the ultimate goal. Great game design makes you think you're not being guided.
PS. I only use the King's Bounty analogy because I recently rediscovered it. Ahh the B&W memories
