you are right there, in the book "halo, the flood" where captain keyes and his ill fated crew stumble upon the room where the flood infection forms are kept they are over whelmed by the creatures and one jumps onto keyes and inserts a sharp tentacle between his shoulder blades and wriggles its way to his spinal cord and he suddenly feels a foul presence in his mind. and the strange entity sifts through his memorys sorting out things of importance, say navigating a star ship for instance. this is where the benefit of finding a live host pays off. meanwhile when jenkins is infected he wakes up a while later to find that he also has an intruder in his mind and it starts jerking his muscles like a child experimenting with a new toy. which means the flood finds its own way of learning to control an alien body. so therefore a normal flood combat form can control a host which is dead but a 'flood brain' like the one that formed out of keyes much prefers a live host to be of any use
