I was pretty sure Marty had posted specific rules somewhere... but I can't find it. :( The general gist was this: Anything you can get out of the game without actually breaking into game files is fair game. Record dialogue while playing, grab textures on a hi-res HaloPC screen... whatever you want. Stuff that you've grabbed this way can be messed with, as well - what IceWeasel was doing yesterday is totally fair. Start extracting files with tools that access the game files directly, though, and all bets are off. Marty's words on the subject (from an email - I hope he's okay with this): I don't want to be a jerk, but we did spend a lot of effort creating stuff in the first place, I never intended it to be a publicly accessible library. This holds not just for sounds, but for art assets, as well. When the modding craze first began, someone extracted all the texture sets directly from the game, and made them available on one of the modding sites. They were contacted pretty quickly, and the files came down. (Hawaiian Pig has been posting a few of those recently - it's beginning to make me uneasy.) Here's the thing: posting ANYTHING publicly requires permission of the copyright owner. That INCLUDES sounds you've recorded in-game, or video footage you make into a fan movie, or art assets you add your own touch to and mail to us as Wallpaper. That copyright owner is Microsoft. They've set the rules for what's allowable - and we abide by those. There's sort of blanket coverage for fan vids, wallpaper creations, etc - as long as you're not charging for them. (There are clear exceptions - like RvB - but they made specific deals with MS.) Break the rules, you're probably not gonna see MS lawyers at your door... but you sure as heck aren't gonna get any more help from Bungie employees about interpretation. :( I hope this makes sense.
