While explaining Halo to mum, I realised that Ruthie had been playing through two entire games without understanding a word of it. So here it is - the whole tru7h as far as we know it. If Halo 3 comes out I'll update this. I'm not taking the books as absolute scripture, only when the really relevant plot bunnies jump out. I hope you enjoy I shouldn't need to mention this - but here be spoilers In the beginning . . .
This may mean that, selectively sentient life is destroyed, or everything of enough biomass is destroyed. This is relevant in the case of Hunters. We don't know for sure. However, from the above quote, I'm inclined to believe all life is destroyed. Note: The stone structures on Installation 05 were preserved for some reason by the Forerunner. Why? It is important also to recognise that 'every strategic option' is a lot of options. The Forerunner were very advance "Puzzling. You brought such ineffective weapons to combat the Flood, despite the containment protocols. "343 Guilty Spark, Halo:CE I don't this refers to just a bad gun combo The Forerunner isolated samples of the Flood and placed them on the Halos for "further study" 343 Guilty Spark, Halo:CE. The Halos were then fired. We do not know if the Halos were fired from the Ark, or from one particular Halo. What we do know is that this was the only firing, and that this firing was completely successful 2401 Penitent Tangent, Halo 2 Mmm, soup!
The Prophets and the Sangheili go to war. They "would surely have destroyed each other" Prophet of Regret, Halo 2 had it not been for the evidence of the Great Journey found by the Prophets. I believe this evidence was left by the Forerunners as a warning to the later inhabitants of the Galaxy. It likely read something like this 'To escape the doom of the Flood we activated the Halos and killed everything, sorry guys'
So the Sangheili join forces with the Prophets as their guard. As time progresses and more races join the Covenant, the first Arbiters come into existence. In times of great trial an Arbiter is selected by the three Prophet Hierarchs. Arbiters inevitably die, eg, in the Grunt Rebellion (God I would have loved to have seen that!) the Arbiter died in fulfilling his duties. At the same time, that Arbiter has gone down in history for his willingness to serve the Great Journey. The Covenant Religion is based on your soul. A good soul is light enough to be carried away by the Divine Wind of the Halos. A bad, or heretic, soul cannot complete the journey and will be eternally doomed. You will taste manflesh!
Good old Master Chief becomes wonderfully cybernetically enhanced, etc. He finds an artefact with a set of co-ordinates which Cortana eventually decodes. The Arbiter (we'll call him Arby for now) leads a huge fleet against Reach, glasses the planet, and followed the Pillar of Autumn through slipspace to . . . A big ring thingy in the middle of space
In the mean time, Arby is peeing his pants in delight. He and the minor Prophet with him are ecstatic - after all this time they've found one of the Sacred Rings. This defines the very essence of w00t! PoA crashes on the sacred ring, the MC and Cortana evacuate and run away. Keyes gets kiddinapped (he's about as handy as his daughter) and MC goes to rescue them on Truth and Reconcilliation, a landed Covenant Cruiser. Keyes rescued, Keyes sends Master Chief to find out what this Halo has got the Covenant so excited for. This leads us to the Silent Cartographer to find the location of the Control Room. Master Chief goes to Control Room, dumps Cortana. Cortana finds out true purpose of Ring while the Master Chief goes to rescue stupid Keyes. Stupid Keyes has got himself all entangled with the release of the Flood. They've been released some time ago, we don't know exactly when - what we do know is that the Covenant did it. Also, Arby's not happy anymore. Everyone evacuate!
The Master Chief gets kidnapped by 343 Guilty Spark who calls him Reclaimer. For all we know, the Chief (and it seems all humanity) are Reclaimers, since they all seem able to perform the task. And Brutes cannot. *shrugs*
In order to "buy some time, in case the Monitor or his Sentinels find a way to activate Halo's final weapon without the index. The machinery in these canyons are Halo's primary firing mechanisms" Cortana, Halo:CE Then - to find Keyes to get the command codes needed to blow the PoA and stop the Halos from firing Keyes turns out to be a command blob, which gives me nightmares, then to PoA to destroy the ship and ring. The fight is only just beginning . . . Insert a novel which makes no sense Yeah. Arbiter bad. After searching for so long, he allowed their only Sacred Ring to be destroyed. That eejit. An overzealous council member starts batting the word 'heresy' around and he is senteced to be hung by his entrails and to have his corpse paraded around the city. Bah, humbug. Chief, on the other hand, is pretty cool. He meets Mirana Keyes, Cortana gets flirty, and Sarge talks about the Athens, Malta and Cairo - the defenses of Earth.
So the Chief jumps out of a space ship to find out the answers. Mombassa is the only place they've landed, "and that Prophet is going to tell us why" Miranda, Halo 2 When Regret is just in his clutches, the Covenant fleet bizarrely makes a slipspace jump, which In Amber Clad only just manages to sneak in on. Did something on Earth tell Regret where to find Halo 05? Possibly. And then we go to back to nekkid Arby. Despite being very cute and vulnerable, he's as good as dead. He can't command ships anymore. Ahhh, but he can become the Arbiter, the vanguard of the Prophets. So that's good. Arbiter goes to fight the "true face of Heresy" Mercy, Halo 2 on a Forerunner structure on basis. The Flood (human and Elite forms) are on this structure, perhaps it was orginally part of Halo 04, before being exploded away. The Arbiter fights, forms friendship with Whitey and kills the Heretic leader.
Regret has arrived at Halo 05, and he calls for High Charity (the Covenant city) to come and meet him there. In the mean time, the Master Chief drops down to try and kill the bastard.
The Prophets and Brutes use this excuse to oust the Elites. If you watch this scene, the Brutes are stealing the elites uniforms. Whitey protests, but by now he and his Elites are doubting the Prophets, this Great Journey sounds a lot like death. He nods to Arbiter as he passes - Arby and Whitey are now on same side. Arby is sent to retrieve Sacred Icon (index). Whitey is also sent down there, but it is clear he's sent there to die. He's a powerful warrior, but it's a suicide mission he's on. Arbiter finds Miranda just as she reaches for the Index.
Audrey unites MC and Arby. He tells them to search two likely places for the Index to be. The MC is taken to High Charity, while Arbiter is transported to the control room area. On High Charity civil war erupts. It's Elites, Hunters and Grunts vs Jackals, Brutes and Buggers. The Master Chief dumps Cortana again and almost gets to Truth and Mercy in time to stop them.
So the Arbiter and Whitey rush through Uprising to get to the Control Room. They try to take the Scarab, but the Phantom carrying Sarge mysteriously crashed and Sarge and his marines have got to the Scarab first. Allies through a mutual enemy, the Arbiter escorts Johnson to the Control Room.
Tartarus forces Miranda to activate the Halos - Cortana neglects to destroy In Amber Clad - Arbiter kills Tartarus and then questions 343 Guilty Spark on what's happening next. Basically - the Halos are in a state of readiness and the Ark will fire them. Cut to the Master Chief on the Forerunner ship - above Earth. Gravemind is with Cortana on the undestroyed High Charity, where he will quiz her about everything that's happened while he's been out of the loop. Soooo. That's pretty much it. My wrists hurt.
