In Response To: Basic chemistry (Capo Rip)

: Either on Gruntworld or in their methane tents you *wouldn't* actually have
: to worry about igniting the methane. Why? Well, what's it going to burn
: with? Grunt atmosphere can't contain oxygen, as methane-breathers it would
: be the most toxic thing they could breathe. It shows how tough the little
: buggers are that they don't explode in flames just running around in
: oxygen atmosphere. The point is, there'd be no oxygen to burn with the
: methane ( CH4 + 2O2 -> CO2 + 2H2O ) so don't worry about the atmosphere
: going up.

: Oh, and they're god damn nasty-looking, aren't they?

Methane alone is extremely flammable, oxygen meanwhile, is not. Oxygen is simply an oxidizer, it will support combustion, but will not actually combust. Methane will both combust and support combustion on it's own. So if battles took place on Grunt's own world, any such explosion would be catostrophic. As long as the atmosphere on the Grunt's world contained only trace amounts of oxygen, it could be present. Think of all the contaiminants we breathe everyday, and 'nothing' happens to us.

Lets think about this, none of the covie weapons use explosions to operate, all of our weapons do. The main operating force behind the bulk of Covie weapons is plasma, plasma wouldn't cause methane to explode, there is no flame front; needles from a needler, while they do explode, they do so in a non firey fashion...the simply 'pop', much like an overfilled balloon. All of the Covie weapons are Covie world safe, while none of ours are....at least non on a Grunt world full of methane. For this simple fact alone, I dont think battles will take place on a methane rich planet. How would we even move about on the planet? Our ships (at least the Pelican) uses propulsion with a flame front...now I have not read any of the three books, and I'm not even sure if the Pelican specifics were discussed, this is speculation. Imagine having to rely on Covie technology alone to move about a planet that we more then likely know nothing about...talk about stacking the odds against you.

But I do have a theory on some possible 'bombs' for H2....imagine vast tanks of methane just sitting about, waiting for a stray bullet or a drop from a ledge....Perhaps this is what some of the explosive crates are in the Zanzibar level?
