I'll get unlazy and check someday) The Flood are very closely based on the Vang Ormikoowl, which first appeared in Starhammer, then in The Vang: Military Form, and then The Vang: Battlemaster, all by Christopher Rowley. The Vang: Military Form is the novel where space scavengers locate the pod that the organism had formed to survive in space and let it loose inside their ship on accident, causing mass havoc and carnage. ~W
