In Response To: Re: HALO? A RIPOFF? (Dom Dunc)
My favourite description of Halo was in a review by Edge (I think). It likened Halo to 'a mix tape of all the finest moments from games and sci-fi movies'. Sure, there are elements of other games in it (I feel there's a LOT of Perfect Dark in there). Some of the dialogue lines are even verbatim from Aliens. And as for 'Ringworld' and 'Starhammer'...
But it's greater than the sum of its parts.
Halo 2 is already shaping up the same - there are elements from Grand Theft Auto, Goldeneye etc that we know about already, and there are bound to be more.
There's an author called Terry Pratchett who said it's fine to pinch stuff as long as you put something back in the pot for others.
I'd say Halo has put more than enough back in compared to what it has appropriated.
Besides, 'RIPOFF' is such un ugly term...
I prefer 'homage' (with plenty of ahhhhh-jjjjjjjjj in the pronunciation).
And I for one like to 'homage' stuff left, right and centre...
