Re: Honestly, seems a bit much for any contest

In Response To: Honestly, seems a bit much for any contest (Someone you may know, maybe not)

: Really.
: First off, you gotta pretty much not have any life or job for that matter to
: put in the time to try to figure this all out and track things down. But I
: just honestly have to say that it is a little too much for a contest?
: Deciphering half the cryptic hints is a pain. You've mentioned finding a
: reference via one link from the map orientation Google search, out of 3
: million hits? Not to mention how obscure of a clue the highlighted search
: result is.

: Heck, you'd think we'd be doing this scavenger hunt to win a life size, fully
: functional Warthog or somethin. (maybe a Banshee that flies even?)
: Contest is mainly for stuff that can be purchased or we may already have.

: Sorry all, but I just need to rant about this, just seems a little over the
: top to win a copy of Halo that I already own.

::shrug::

The first winning entry came in 33 hours after the contest went live. The grand prize was a HELL of a lot more than a copy of Halo. (In fact, if you turned in a solution right now you'd win a strategy guide, a mini master chief, 2 t-shirts, and some stickers - considerably more than 'a copy of Halo that you already own'.)

The last one of these that we did had, at its end, scans of some of the original papers used in the designing of the game of Marathon. Notes from the developers, discarded ideas, that sort of thing. Took over 2 months to solve, and involved 400 people (and several thousand posts on a forum dedicated to the search). Folks were doing it for the FUN of winning.

If you think it's not worth your time, don't bother looking for trinkets. If you think you have to search 3 million web pages for solutions, you're not really our target audience; you haven't even bothered to read the information we've put out about the contest.

Whatever. Play, or don't play. There's cool stuff to win for those who like puzzles. Nobody's holding a gun to your head.
