In Response To: Why the name Reclaimer? Here's why. *Long* (Wintermute @ Work)

: Okay, here goes. I can't believe I didn't figure this out already!!

: I was just playing the Maw at work here, when I hear the good ol' 343GS
: speech about "lost history", etc. Then the name
: Reclaimer...again. Wheels begin to turn, and it hits me: Jason Jones said
: that the Halo storyline was very heavily influenced by Christopher
: Rowley's Starhammer, that's where he got the idea for the Halo
: superweapon.

: The Flood are a direct import from the Starhammer series as well, they were
: called the Vang Ormikoowl.

: The Keyes Blob is also direct import from the second Vang book, from a scene
: where a higher level Vang (Flood) form is incubated amidst three living
: host bodies. You'll see three sets of legs sticking out from the Keyes
: Blob. Need I say more?

: Jason also said that the Mote series (by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven,
: Niven also wrote Ringworld) played a big part in influencing the storyline
: of Halo.

: At first I thought that meant that's where he got the Covenant idea from,
: from the Mote series, because the Moties (the first Alien race that Humans
: meet) have a caste system, much like the Covenant.

: This could be convincingly argued, but more interesting is that (this is what
: I think I've figured out) he also seems to have set a certain structure of
: technological advancement on the human race that comes directly from the
: Mote series as well.

: Most people think, or at least have a sneaking suspicion that the humans are
: the Forerunner.

: I think there is one reason to believe its a case of mistaken identity on
: 343GS's part, and one reason (the reason I just came up with) to believe
: it is in fact that Humans and the Forerunner are the same race.

: Mistaken Identity theory: In Starhammer, the Starhammer superweapon is left
: abandoned by the race that created it, with only a resident AI/warrior
: robot to maintain it. (sounds like Halo and 343GS, without the warrior
: part)

: The robot is said to be modelled after its batrachian creators. This means
: the race that created the Starhammer was froglike.

: Now this is a huge stretch, but if the Forerunner are actually a non-human
: race, my bet is they will resemble this batrachian race from Rowley's
: book, or atleast the idea of a froglike race, since you never get to read
: a scene where there are any living members of this race.

: So, if the forerunners are a froglike race, 343GS could be mistaking the way
: the MC looks for being a forerunner because he looks vaguely froggy.

: Hey, I said it was a stretch!

: NEW! Humans as Forerunner theory.

: In the Mote series, the Moties are an alien civilization that has these
: cycles where they advance to a certain point technologically and then
: destroy themselves in war. They keep blasting themselves back into the
: Stone Age.

: So in one of these cycles, some alien gets the bright idea to make a kind of
: fortress/museum of their higher technology so that it will survive the
: next big war and then the survivors of the war and their offspring don't
: have to take as long to rebuild their society because once they figure out
: how to get into the "museum", their growth as a race with
: accelerate by leaps and bounds.

: So this happened to the Forerunner 900,000 years ago...

: Maybe not in the same Cycle System, but maybe in a war against the Flood or
: something. Either way, I'm betting they were wiped out and somehow the
: seed of Human civilization on Earth was in effect the next generation of
: the Forerunner race.

: So finally, the MC lands on Halo, walks into the Control Room, 343GS thinks
: he's "coming back" (figuratively OR literally) to reclaim the
: higher technology of Halo, or just Halo itself.

: Hence the name Reclaimer . Also why 343GS talks to the MC about having fired
: Halo before, etc. Maybe the Forerunner were forced to wipe themselves out
: using Halo in order to destroy the spreading Flood threat.

: 343GS says "you asked me if it were my choice, would I do it?"
: (something like that.) He may have been talking about the last Forerunner
: he was in contact with that (the one that actually fired Halo) had to make
: the decision to wipe out his whole infected race to keep the Flood from
: spreading to the rest of the universe.

: The Forerunner in question may have left and told 343GS that he would be
: back, and so that's why it sounds as if he thinks he's met the MC before.

: Actually, that sounds a lot like parts of the Starhammer/Vang series.

: What do you think?

dunno. sometimes it's weird. 343gs, says the installation- was built to study the flood, and he's glad some survived, to reproduce.
to contain and study the flood? where did the people that built the ring, find the human looking flood? i get the feeling a huge piece of the puzzle is missing.
