Halo takes place during the 17 years Durandal spent searching for Lh'owon and stopped over at Earth to teach mankind how to make warp-capable (FTL) fusion missles. So sayeth Nathan! Weather he meant a fully corrected M2 timeline or a slightly messed up, but as close to correct as possible Infinity timeline has yet to be clarified, I think. (: Jägermeister :)
