That was mentioned way, way back. Probably even before we started working from the larger images, although I can't remember for sure at this point. If you look at Bungie.org, you'll notice that the grey-green stripes fit the glyphs into the larger design context of the page. I don't know if the stripes are actually relevent to the puzzle or not.
