I think the book is the pied piper. After all, it's also about magic pipes that bend the world to your will and make people follow you when you play them. (In PIDS's case, the latter is because playing them alerts nearby monsters to your position if I recall right)

The Star Wars observation about the otomatone is an interesting take: those recorder things the big white headed creatures play really do look like them. They came out in 2009 though so they can't have been the actual props in the film, though Star Wars may well have been CUBE Toys's inspiration for them.
