Video games seem especially guilty of this cliché. Almost every single sci-fi video game that takes place across multiple star systems uses this trope: Starcraft, Halo, Homeworld, Mass Effect, Masters of Orion, Stellaris (any 4X game, really), Freespace, the Journeyman Project, Star Control... I could go on, but I'll stop there.
Off the top of my head I think only maybe the Escape Velocity series (by Ambrosia Software?), Eve, and Elite don't use this trope? I'm not familiar with the second two so I don't know for certain.
