As President People alluded to, remember you are comparing Marathon (1994) with Doom (1993), and Jason Jones was almost certainly influenced by Doom in making Marathon---everybody was back then. Hell, I remember my sister's (who has no love of video games) reaction to Doom back when we were in high school, and even *she* thought it was awesome.
But yes, I agree that the graphics and on Marathon, and especially Marathon 2 were better than any of the Dooms from the mid 90s. That's part of what makes the Marathon series so memorable.
