I used an academically licensed version of Lightwave for a couple years, and my experience was grand. I gave Blender a pass, but I didn't want to spend the effort to figure out the funny interface and gave up pretty quickly. If you're going for free though, for supremely functional rendering applications you're basically limited to POV-Ray and Blender.

Also, (lol) Bryce is cheap. ;)
