they probably had some symbolic meaning in mind

It's really obivious-

1) Durandal was the sword in Minotar
2) He "cannot be broken" as he states himself in Marathon several times.

Therefore, the name makes perfect sence from the Bungie/story perspective. However, I'm suggesting that that doesn't matter. What matters is that Durandal gave himself the name- really- or chose to accept the name as reffering to the sword, Durandana.
