: Anyway to get to the point I found a link to where the Windows files. I just
: downloaded them to day but noticed its a ZIP file folder and files. If
: there isnt a problem (legal or otherwise) I could probably repackage the
: game into an MSI file. Not sure if this is a no-no cause the One- Click
: installer has been removed. Anyone have any info or something?
There's been much debate over whether it's possible to bundle non-GPL content with a GPL engine in the same binary. Some will argue that MSI installers are essentially scripts, not binaries, and so qualify as delivery vehicles, meaning they are exempt from inheriting the GPL license of the enclosed game. Others (like me) would prefer to see a completely Free installer, with all the non-Free content either downloaded automatically, or just stored beside the installer in the zip file.
The big deal about the one-clicks was the lack of source code for the game (which has since been resolved). If you follow the GPL in regards to Aleph One's source (essentially, you need to make it available from the same place the MSIs are downloadable from; linking to sourceforge is insufficient), I don't think anyone will complain if you make MSI installers that contain the data files as well, provided that any extra batch files and scripts are available separately as well so people can alter the MSI installers if they want.
Personally, I would not choose any installation method that includes non-free content (data files) and Free content (Aleph One) in the same executable; but I can understand how there can be different interpretations of this rule of the GPL.
