One major reason for me gluming would be that I purchased one of those new iMacs a few weeks ago... feels like a totally worthless buy now. Also, I'm a software developer, and the switch from MacOS9 to X was pretty painful, even though Apple claimed it was as easy as stomping on kittens, getting java apps converted to MacOSX. This will probably not be any less painful, which is why I won't do it. I'm going Windows only for now on, Steve can keep on switching standards 'til purple frogs comes out of his ass, I won't be there to watch it.
: I've been reading the live coverage of Steve Jobs keynote and it sounds like
: it won't be so bad. Tiger runs on Intel today and indeed the rumors of
: parallel development were true - every version of OS X has been compiled
: to run on Intel from day one. There will also be transparent emulation of
: PPC apps called Rosetta. Hopefully that means that even M1 will run on an
: Intel Mac without the need for a separate emulator. Hell, this might
: even work on other brands of PC's once hackers figure out how. M$ and
: Adobe will release all their apps as fat binaries for both platforms, so
: that will take care of 99% of my needs. The biggest problem as I see it is
: for people who need to buy something now. I would only buy a PPC-based Mac
: if my current ones are destroyed - otherwise I would try to wait it out. I
: suspect that everyone else will do the same, which could mean big trouble
: for Apple. They undoubtedly have sufficient reserves thanks to the success
: of the iPod to survive the transition, and expect that their revenues will
: soar once the transition is complete.
: Well, I guess I'd better get back to work.
