That's not cheating. Having previous saves to fall back on in case a run is ruined is very useful to have. I liked having one save file for each map back when Aleph One still had you manually save at pattern buffers instead of treating saving as a "quicksave" when you use one.
Later branch levels vary on how much of a level is complete for the failure timeline. E.g. speak to Tycho for Chapter 2 failure, speak to Leela for success. Follow the S'pht for failure in Chapter 3, track down Leela for success etc. I recommend playing the failure planks at least once so you get the full story. (Plus a few of the failure plank maps can be fun, though admittedly not all) Also because it feels like finding secret levels in other 2.5D shooters and older 3D ones.
