Are they really pointless? Perhaps they are redundant for the SO, since they have a fancy HUD and all, but maybe not for the humans for which they were intended. In the original artwork, Durandal's indentured BoBs appear to fire such that the scope would be at eye height... were it not, as I've just realised it is, omitted.

Interesting that the scope is missing from the BoB sprite... Perhaps the scope provides targeting data to the SO's HUD, but the BoBs take it off and use iron sights?
