	In Response To: Re: some random thoughts (scratskinner) : Looking at "Opening the Eye of Chaos, Part Three", first they think : it's a plot by Xio, then they realize her usefulness, and then Xio : contacts them to demand Metis back. So unless it actually is "on : cue", Xio found out some way other than Kron calling him up. Good point. And it would be good to have some followup to Metis' client. I'll think about working in something about Xio following up on Metis' whereabouts so he's not just suddenly showing up without explanation. Though he'll still just be ordinary Joe when he's talking to her client, of course, to save the big reveal of super tech powers for the dramatic rescue. : How closely does Xio keep tabs on Metis? How long did it take to notice Metis : must be in trouble? Any important business of his own interrupted by this : crisis? I figure I'll have him basically tracking her ship, and when she leaves it and doesn't come back for a couple of days he'll stop by to look into what's happening, find her client hiding out on the ship (presumably he can't fly it himself, security measures of some kind), and find out what happened to her from him. : Tom had "been trying to mount an expedition to recover" the Gem of : Fire "for some time" about the same time news came of the orcish : unification. I get the impression this was part of some unified plan on : both Tom and Sue's part. Right, I forgot about that part. Tom was trying to find the Gem of Fire for similar reasons to why Sue was getting the Gem of Ice. Warlocks are angry and aggressive because they're basically half-vampire, and the Gem of Ice would have the effect of cooling them off and stopping their constant wars. Wizards meanwhile are aloof and apathetic because they're half-elf, so someone wielding the Gem of Fire over them would be able to move them to actually do something, presumably something good is what Tom intended, but it turned out to be a bad idea when the good king's son was not so good himself and moved the wizards to evil instead. I should note something about that somewhere. : Er, I think you missed a quote there. I was asking how they'd know about : other uncorrupted avatars. (Though Metis might have noticed when looking : to see who's in the first test-run.) Reading back, I don't know if I'm following this thread of the conversation at all. Tom and Sue wouldn't necessarily know whether or not there were other uncorrupted avatars (or ghosts thereof). I was saying in my author's omniscient voice that as it happens, there aren't any others besides those two. If there were, Tom and Sue would probably have met them at some point, but not necessarily. : It would be interesting to see Tom almost as surprised that he regenerated as : the Prince was. And I note that Tom and Sue turned "human" and : orc, rather than elf and vampire. Not quite finished detoxing? A vampire or elf's embrace turns the target into an orc or human respectively, regardless of their original race. Well, unless they're already a vampire or elf themselves, or the resultant race already, then it just drains/replenishes their vitality. (So a vampire can bit a vampire or orc [or the hybrid warlocks] and their race doesn't change, an elf can kiss an elf or human [or the hybrid wizards] and their race doesn't change, but vampire bites turn elves, humans, and old ones into orcs, while elf kisses turn vampires, orcs, and old ones into elves). : So what would the point of no return be here? or the point of "really : really hard to claw your way back from that", in the case of Tom and : Sue? (not necessarily time-based, just what values need to tip over a few : points to render you nonhuman) I'm not sure, but I should probably work out the details of that. : Was it just the different name, or did she have a different background then, : too? Just a different name, as the character didn't have much background until after the name had already been changed. The earliest version of the character was "Murdock's sister", who I still need to name. I thought of the two of them together as "the dhampire twins" even though that's not really accurate. I had had an idea for some ancient dhampire-wizard guy who founded the Church of the Eldest who they might meet, and when I got around to fleshing that character out decided to have him be instead a former life of Murdock, and then thought that his sister should have a former-life counterpart too. Since they were "the twins" in my mind, I called them Thomas and Didymus (which both mean "twin" in Latin and Greek respectively). When I needed to come up with names for them from before the falling of the darklight, I picked Tom and Deedee because they sound similar. But I hated the name Deedee and when I got around to fleshing out their pre-Virtuality characters I decided to make her Chinese ("Xianian" in the alternate history) and so gave her the Chinese name Xiuying, whence Xiu, Sue, etc.
