This might be backing away from the whole "Virtuality hardware exists elsewhere than Earth" thing, but perhaps just the interview with Metis's client (I assume it's taking place in his investigation of Metis's disappearance) is enough to indicate that people other than him can get admin access without his knowledge (hiding his presence from the rest of Virtuality, disabling/subverting access to "magic", other nasty things), and this inspires efforts later on, when he's buried under rubble, to patch this up. These efforts would help play a part in instigating his own overthrow by the queens of Ice and Fire.

(Also, it would appear you have Murdock under the influence of one of the gems growing up. Would someone killing him while still under that influence have left him unable to regenerate?)
Alternately, perhaps they have some sort of scrying device? Or maybe it's when they're Tom and Deedee, and they're going over what Metis was able to recover of the early days? (Justification being "Couldn't find your memories from this era, anything look familiar to you?")

I was thinking more... there's prejudice against this person (or this sort of person) widespread enough and potent enough (and unquestioned enough) they can't have kids, because that prejudice carries over death. (Depending on how widely-known knowledge about reincarnation is, any kids they do end up with (rare stragglers either from out of range of that prejudice, or too far gone to care) might end up targeted because "anyone willingly being born to them is probably evil")
This sort of thing probably gets more common the less "pure" corrupted avatars get, as Elves keep to their station too much for any need to keep lowborn souls from the upper crust (or highborn out of poverty), and Vampires are too empathetic to try and deny anyone a new life.
