In Response To: PID, Marathon in Ars Technica's history of FPS *LINK* (Hopper) : Ars Technica traces the origin of the first-person shooter back to 1973, and

Omega Props. I think Ultima 1 sort of counts as two of the weapons are a phaser and a blaster rifle, all dungeons were an early wireframe first-person and you went into dungeons a lot. He also leaves out Eternam for DOS in 1992.
This game is a graphic adventure game mostly in third person for most areas, but the game overworld is a first-person exploration game with minor shooting elements. Sort of like a mix and match of Commander Keen, but as an adventure game and not a platformer.
This link is to a review of Eternam to show you what it is all about.
Still, it's a great post. Makes me want a Marathon 4 and Anniversary to go with Aleph One Marathon, PID, Brutal Doom, Doom 3 BFG and Doom 4 all the more. Maybe also Epic could finally release an actual Unreal game based on the original instead of the tedious, overdone Team Fortress Classic clones it has been making in the franchise.
