I've always been a fan of the theory that the Jjaro were a race of AIs, that Durandal and the rest of the human AIs were based on a Jjaro who died and was buried or otherwise left behind in the Sol system and was later discovered by humanity, and that the Jjaro were designed to be paired with another AI that would balance their naturally aggrandizing tendencies (Yrro/Pthia). Otherwise, it just strains suspension of disbelief too much for Durandal to have been that easily mergeable with an alien AI from the other side of the galaxy that really shouldn't have been compatible at all. It also nicely explains the human's inability to figure out why their AIs always go rampant (they don't have the complete design), the "ancient endless balance, then nothing" message from Yrro following the loss of Pthia, and Thoth's single-minded balance obsession in general.
