The inconsistent player sprite locations are just due to the ~200ms lag between me (the host) and Blackstar.
The desyncs seemed to be caused sometimes just by networking faults, but sometimes seemingly by unexpected interaction between the teleporting feature of the co-op script and level scripting. (That is speculation on my part.)
In this case, it's not a lead-up to another Doom episode.
