The slow speed is alright for the original game as it ties in with the horror setting but it becomes a drag quickly when backtracking or dying and trying to return to the bit you were stuck at.
At best without cheating; you can strafe as you move forward to go a bit faster like Marathon, but to actually get decent speed you need the Turbo cheat. it's useful for re-treading lost ground or backtracking only as it speeds up the monsters and sound effects too.
For better running speed period, you may consider holding out with the Mac versions until the Windows port is finished as the running speed and monsters are faster overall in that one without everything sounding like its on helium.
