: But PID does have maps! Look!

: I need to add some qualifiers to what "accessible" means: —Everyone
: that's going to complain about not having 3D graphics have already left
: the room.

: —Yes, you're told what you need to do, but your hand isn't being held at
: every step (a lot of noobs won't even read the terminals)

: —Try to bear in mind when I'm comparing their "popularity" and
: "accessibility" it should be framed in the contemporary time
: period, as in pre-aleph one Marathon and Console Halo. I had a friend back
: then who played Halo constantly and talk about the hollowed out moon
: symbol (or something) being a marathon thing, and I was like "oh,
: yeah, I remember that game," so when I showed him Marathon he looked
: at it like it was some oddity and made fun of my computer for being a mac.

: —There's lots of other things I can just lump into "modern gamer vs
: old-school game."

Yes it has maps and very beautiful they are. But my point was more about its hardcore puzzle nature. Even before playing I had read short tips pages about PID, I think maybe they came with demo downloads? They told about crystals and I think what the yellow crystal did - even that was a hell of a leap for anyone playing blind to make. Having played the demos, I even knew I was looking for a blue crystal to take out the banshees, but I don't think I would ever have found it in the full game without walkthroughs. And the same goes for -a lot- of other stuff - hell I -still- don't know where the second part of the bomb code came from, was it a manual thing? No guides ever made that clear.

And even with some knowledge, playing for the first time one eventually realised one was going to be struggling for ammo, and that playing through with the knife as long as possible was a good approach. It was a -great- game, but was aimed at quite a different audience from the likes of Marathon or Halo, not just in the way of modern vs oldschool gaming. Comparing that to something like Aquaria, it was only -secrets- that were kept particularly well hidden ... although I did still have to look up central story stuff sometimes. That's probably the best example I've played of oldschool complexity in a modern environment, although I'm sure there are plenty ... I just tend to avoid them I guess ;).

For mine, the lack of a map makes Halo less accessible than Marathon out of the box. But I hear what you're saying re the story; you really can't avoid knowing what you're supposed to be doing, although it may be hard to find the way the first time through. The Marathon terminals do a pretty good job of telling the player what to do, but I do know that even Arrival turned people off with the duct maze, and what actually happens to 2d maps of 3d areas :). So we're more in agreement than it seemed lol.
