The reason why you've only realised this now is that in M1A1 the dead civilian sprite was not implemented. So a whole generation of players have past through The Rose not realising that this level is littered with strategically placed dead Bobs to build a sense of loss or failure.
If you are playing this level for the first time and trying to keep the Bobs alive then coming across these groups of dead bodies is pretty gut wrenching, since you feel you weren't quick enough to save them. Of course, once you've played it a few times you realise what they really are.
And of course thanks to Greg you got a second pistol. If memory serves Greg would dual wield pistols in network games, swearing by their rapid rate of fire and high accuracy over distance. Dual pistols are also pretty good against Hulks.
