Yeah, I'm not sure either, and unfortunately, neither of us were LOOKING at the column during the sequence, so I can't see what happened. (Freecam? Anyone? Treellama?)
I can only speculate either that by leaving the area without finishing the sequence (terminal, button, door) we triggered something else in the level that deactivated the button, or that we somehow did something to trigger the button more than once, lowering the 2nd column in front of the door and then raising it again, and also rendering the button nonfunctional. Not sure which.
