After a stupid number of tries -- really, do NOT get me started on just how bad the mouse controls are in the original game -- I ran through this trap successfully a couple different ways. For both ways, I opened the first monster closet and cleared everything out in an attempt to test the theory that it was the number of active monsters in the original game that made the Compilers less likely to activate prematurely. First, I walked over the trigger to the closets, turned and ran back to just past the first closet, and waited for the Pfhor to come to me before firing. There were no early Compiler activations. The second way I tried was to trigger the trap and stand my ground, firing until the contents of the second closet were cleared out, then fall back to collect a replacement Alien Weapon. About half the time the Compilers would stay put, and the other half they would activate early and be part of the pack of staff Fighters coming out of the side corridor. I have film of one of these second technique runs with the Compilers activating early if anyone cares to see it. This is not a vidmaster beauty run -- it is fugly! By clearing out the first closet in advance, my experience in the original game is similar to that of beta 3, but I would not be able to declare that the two experiences were identical. Clearly the Compilers do seem more likely to come up early, probably as a result of a more alert Enforcer, possibly caused by having fewer active critters when the trap is sprung, but this theory requires more testing. OK, I've done my thing, time to go make a pitcher of frozen adult beverages!
