In Response To: Re: Rule Thirty-Pfhor... (Dispatcher)

: Slave races.

Actually, most of the enemies we meet are not slave races. Fighters, Troopers, Hunters, and Enforcers are clearly all, in some loose way, genuine Pfhor. In fact, all of the slave races, as far as we know, fit into the 'Conditioned' Rank, which sits at the absolute bottom of the Pfhor hierarchy. However, Enforcers and even Troopers have been seen to be members of the 'Willful' Rank, the third-lowest and fourth-highest Rank in the Pfhor hierarchy. Clearly they are not slave races: no-one puts slaves in charge of their rank-and-file soldiers.

We're not dealing with slaves, and we're not dealing with a Zerg-like force either (pardon the Starcraft reference). So what could be the explanation for the diversity of the Pfhor 'species'?

I'll throw out three of them for you:

Explanation #1: The Pfhor create new embryos scientifically and give them genomes that make them perfectly suitable for certain roles within the Pfhor military.

This reminds of me of the words of James Watson, one of the two men who discovered DNA: "If we could make better human beings by knowing how to add genes, why shouldn't we do it?" Likewise, if the Pfhor knew how to make better Pfhor by tweaking their genomes, why wouldn't they do it?

Explanation #2: The Pfhor genetically modify already-existing embryos early in development to make them fit the different roles within the Pfhor military. Where the embryos come from, of course, is the question; and a rather disturbing one in terms of its implications. Therefore, I'll leave you at the 'genetic modification' segment for now.

Explanation #3: The Pfhor, like any good insects, have a few organisms high-up in their hierarchy who do nothing but spit out new Pfhor. Perhaps these organisms are 'specialized', in that one organism will spit out Enforcers, another will spit out Fighters/Troopers, etc. This reminds me of a discussion we had at some point in the last year where somebody brought up the Hindmost Creche and implied that perhaps it serves this type of function. Interestingly, if I can remember correctly, I think I took the line that it did indeed serve that purpose. If anybody could find that discussion, I'd be eternally grateful.

Vale,
Perseus
