so where do you get hyper-time?

In Response To: Re: Oh, okay, then we do disagree. (Forrest of B.org)

: But the problem with that is that the very notion of change implies something
: like time; a "hyper-time", some dimension across which things
: are different. [snip]

Well, sort of. This is where the graphing gets fun. To plot the change of something in terms of time you only have to graph it in terms of global time and relative time. The change would be (global time)/(relative time).

There is no reason to have hyper-time because we can already measure the time-displacement in the temporal dimension. We can already show it changing by graphing the changes in the four-dimensions.

The only quirky part is showing the change. This is actually easy without your hyper-time. All that needs to be done is to simply show the change. Someone who is traveling in time will also be traveling in the other three dimensions and those spacial changes are the basis for the changes in time.

In my model, hyper-time is nothing more than space. If you rearrange space to perfectly match what it was three years ago it will be as if we are living three years in the past. The only difference will be the change in the temporal axis. If you change only the temporal axis no one would notice anything because our senses have trouble with anything other than the spacial dimensions.

You can still talk about temporal changes and say that this or that timeline used because our language begins to break down when trying to talk abstractly about time. Our entire language is based on the assumption that we are temporally stable.

But this does not mean there must be a hyper-time. We can say that time "was" changed, but it sounds funny. Part of the problem is relative experience.

: [snip] So I
: don't think we disagree at all on the subjective experience a time
: traveller would have; I'm just saying it can't make any sense to speak of
: changing timelines without acknowledging in what way a timeline "used
: to be" some other way than it is now, since you couldn't mean that
: literally.

I claim that this is a problem of our language and not evidence of a hyper-time.

Assuming the position of a time-god that can see everything objectively, it could plot and mathematically describe everything that changed and show what "used" to be and what "now" is without needing a hyper-time. Hyper-time only needs to exist when we try to explain it in English.

It is like the difference of describing "up" and "down" to someone who has lived on a planet their whole live versus someone who has lived in zero gravity their whole live. To the former, "up" and "down" are necessarily relative. The latter just knows it as another axis.

If the two had a conversation about jumping, the latter would be utterly confused when the former said that people always jump "up" on the planet or that whatever goes "up" must come "down".

There is a breakdown in the languages. Unfortunately for us, there is no objective way to describe temporal events in our language. The words simply are not there. Mathematically, there is no need for hyper-time (at least, no need I have found, I could be wrong).

The graph would simply be plotting global time versus local time. When the time-god takes the pencil and marks the journal it knows exactly what has happened and can graph and plot the entire thing on a piece of paper.

Time itself does not change, space changes. When someone "travels in time" they are not traveling as we think about traveling in space. No matter what they change, time stays rather constant. It is just an axis. The other three dimensions never change either. The only things that change are those things that we plot in the dimensions.

If I travel back seven years and kill "younger" self, I have changed nothing in terms of time. Time is still going. All four dimensions have remained unchanged. My actions will cause everything to be different, but the dimensions are not changing. Everything else is simply changing in relation to those dimensions.

The only two people that would ever know about it would be the traveler and the time-god because the know about they change. If the change is known, it can be graphed. There is no need for hyper-time to describe "when" it changed, we already have a dimension for that: time.

Now, I vaguely remember running into a hitch when working all of this out the last time you and I were chatting about it but I think it was only my identity problem which basically amounts to how to actually plot anything in space-time and how to keep it consistent with free-will. Mathematics generally do not help free-will's case much. :P

I get what you are saying about hyper-time, and it makes sense. But I question the necessity of it. We seem to directly experience three dimensions spacial, but we only ever experience one temporally. We know of at least one temporal dimension, but I see no need for your hyper-time. It makes things easier, but I think my* model stands up.

*I highly doubt this my model, but I never bothered to go look any of this up anywhere. I just think about it from time to time and have discussions about it with other people hoping they will help me find the flaws. My conversations with you have shown me an interesting problem with all of this, but not one that affects my model. It just made me stop and wonder about something else.
